I'd like to bring your attention on Nan Madol (Item 7A, pp. 81-86).

The site was inscribed on the WH List and at the same time on the in Danger List.

Archeological studies have been carried out and their value recognized.

This simultaneous inscription on both lists can be seen also in the case of many other sites (such as the Cultural Landscape and Archaeological Remains of the Bamiyan Valley, Afghanistan, Item 7A, pp. 74-78) that are now World Heritage Sites, but this procedure could be discussed further at the Committee.

Although doubts remained on how to manage these sites, before inscription, the urgency to protect them has brought to the inscription. However, despite of the many efforts undertaken by the local government, UNESCO, States Parties and other stakeholders, in many cases very little progress can be seen in their effective protection through the years.

Although there is no doubt about the importance of those sites, some argue that inscription onto the WH List should be avoided if effective management measures are not in place, while others think that the inscription has the potential to help finding out conservation measures and could be a first step towards the enhancement of the site. For example, it could be beneficial that the WH Committee considers to discuss how to speed up the process in these cases.
